There are 3 things that a girl’s got to have when it comes to work out essentials, and they gotta be both stylish and functional. 1) The best glass water bottle. 2) The best yoga mat on the planet. 3) A backpack to carry everything.
I was shopping with a friend earlier today and she mentioned she couldn’t find a perfect water bottle. She uses stainless steel because she can’t find a glass water bottle that she feels she won’t break. Then she asked what I use.
Without hesitation, I said: my bkr. I love it because it’s functional and stylish: two of my non-negotiables when making any fashion-related purchase, really any purchase at all. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s the cutest water bottle on the planet, if it doesn’t work the way I need it to work, and it doesn’t make my life easier, than I’m fine without it.
Hence, my love for bkr. Specifically, the Spiked Naked 500 ML bottle.
Not only is it cute AF, but it’s also a reflection of my personal style: soft, feminine, strong. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Brooke Hampton, “I’m all peace, love, and light, and a little go fuck yourself.” (Seriously, go follow @barefootfive on Instagram for some spiritual gangster posts. You’ll be inspired and entertained).
I love with bkr’s glass water bottles because their not plastic, so I’m doing good for the earth. The cap handle makes my life easier for me to carry other things like my towel and yoga mat (keep reading for my recommendation on the best yoga mat on the planet), and the spout is a perfect size so I can take quick sips in between sets. I’ve already spilled water down my shirt with other bottles because the spout was too wide. Drooling on yourself = not a good look. Efficient design matters. Both the glass and silicon sleeve are dishwasher safe, which makes it super to easy to clean. The sleeve comes off nice and easy. The second work out recommendation that I bring to the gym is, in my opinion, THE BEST yoga mat on the planet, the Harmony Yoga Mat by Jade Yoga. I’ve tried several yoga mats. Here’s why I didn’t feel they worked for me. My first mat was from Old Navy. I was just starting out, and didn’t want to invest that much, but you always get what you pay for. Great first step, but the quality just wasn’t there. Once I started going regularly I turned to the lightweight Prana mat which had better grip, was chemical free, and good for the earth. But I started to sweat more from hot yoga and power vinyasa, so I would slip from time to time. Next, I tried Lululemon. It worked well, but I couldn’t deal the smell of the mat. Then, my yoga teacher friend gave me her Manduka mat. It was heavy, and too smooth of a surface for me. I finally found home with Jade Yoga. It was wide enough, long enough, didn’t smell funny, and the grip would hold up no matter how sweaty I got. It’s eco-friendly, free of toxic chemicals, and gave me the perfect amount of cushion for standing and balancing poses. Match made in heaven. I can’t wait to get another one for home. The only thing is they fade easily from the sun, so if you’re biking to class or throwing it in the backseat of your car, make sure it’s got a cover on it. Jade Yoga has a nice variety of carrier bags, though I haven’t tried them yet.
My last recommendation is a backpack to carry everything in. The Row Backpack from Fabletics. It carries the combination lock for my gym locker, bike lock, weight training gloves, water bottle, yoga journal (with my sequences), and my wallet, headphones, and cell. It’s the perfect size, lightweight, and the straps are super smooth and comfortable on my shoulders. I also love that it comes with a mesh-zip inside pocket so I can see where my headphones are, and it comes with a black bag for your shoes so you don’t get whatever is on the bottom of your shoes all over the stuff inside your bag. The zip pockets on the on both sides are perfect, easily accessible storage for your cell and keys. Which comes in handy when you need to swipe your membership tag at the front desk, or send a quick text before putting your phone away for your gym time.
There you have it. Three items that are stylish, functional, and make your gym time easier. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
